Adjustable ergonomic furniture is beneficial to all children

Children sometimes require interventions in addition to ergonomics and changes in the physical environment.

Funding for the purchase of therapies and adjustable ergonomic furniture may be available to children meeting the required criteria of each funding source.

Better Start

Better Start for Children with Disability is a Federal Government initiative providing funding support for early intervention services, resources and therapies.

Children need to be registered prior to their 6th Birthday.

Children registered can access up to $12,000 (maximum $6,000 in any one financial per year) up to their 7th Birthday, to pay for early intervention from occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy , audiology, orthoptics and psychology.

Funding can be used for both therapy and resources to allow your child the best possible preparation for school. Up to 35% of funding can be used to purchase resources, to a maximum of $2,100 per financial year, or $4,200 in total.

Families living in outer regional or remote areas may be eligible for an additional one-off payment of $2,000.

Each disability included in the Better Start program is subject to an eligibility threshold.

These thresholds have been determined by the Department of Social Services.

Funding

Funding is available for children who are aged up to seven years of age and have been diagnosed with one of the following :

  • Kabuki syndrome
  • Smith - Magenis syndrome
  • CHARGE syndrome
  • Cornelia de Lange syndrome
  • Cri du Chat syndrome
  • Microcephaly
  • Rett's disorder
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • Fragile X
  • Hearing impairment
  • Sight impairment
  • Prader-Willi syndrome
  • Williams syndrome
  • Angelman syndrome

Helping Children

The Australian Government has committed ongoing funding to address the need for services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), their families and carers.

Helping Children with Autism ( HCWA) 

Your child must receive a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder by their paediatrician. They then need to be registered by an Autism advisor prior to their 6th Birthday. Contact Autism Queensland on 1800428847 to make an appointment with an Autism Advisor or (07) 3273 0000 to discuss registration.
